Field Experience

Level Class Location
1 EDFN 338 Medary Elementary School/Brookings, SD
For my Foundations of American Education class I was placed at a first grade class in the Medary Elementary School in Brookings for observation. During the few hours of observation I really paid attention to they way the teacher had her classroom set up and how she organized each subject. I also had gotten the chance to help students one on one with their reading assignments. This was a great way to just get into the classroom and get a feel for the environment.

1 EPSY 302  Multi-Cultural Center/ Sioux Falls, SD
The Multicultural Center is an after school program that I had gotten a chance to volunteer at. Children of many different ethnicity and nationality attend this center. At the Multicultural Center, I helped get the snacks ready for the students and handed it out. After snack was completed, each student was able to choose to do a certain activity picked for that day. Some of the activities included arts and crafts, homework, sports, or a movies. Then each student picked and activity and started. The volunteers then split up into the different activities to help. This was a great experience for I had the chance to chat with a variety of cultures or then mine and learn a little more then I knew before.

1 Sped 100 Liberty Center/ Sioux Falls, SD
For my SPED 100 field experience, I spent 12 hours at the Liberty Center. This center is a private, non-profit organization providing out-of-school-time services, childcare services and a full-time summer program to children from 3 to 21 years of age. This organization also allows all children with any needs or disabilities. During my time at the Liberty Center I came in and helped with the after school program. Some fun and interesting things we did while I was there was: touch football, bead necklaces, and painting Easter eggs.

2 ELED 440-Language Arts Methods Madison Elementary/ Madison, SD
For K-8 Language Arts Methods, I worked with two other peers to develop lesson plans for a 3rd grade classroom at the Madison Elementary.  Between the three of us working together we took turns writing the lesson plans and revising them before we taught. Each of us during the lesson have a certain duty to make sure the lesson would run smoothly and that we used our time wisely. During this experience we taught the class about timelines and the writing process. We had brought in a bear on the first day of class to make a timeline and actually ended up keeping him there in the classroom to help students with their writing process. The students had a lot of imagination with the stories they had written and this was a fun activity to teach.

2 ELED 450-Reading Methods St. Thomas School/ Madison, SD
I was in the fifth grade classroom at St. Thomas for my field experience for Reading Methods. During this time I integrated reading with the civil war period. We did many things in the classroom such as read out-loud, group reading, KWL Charts, Readers Theatre, and making their own story books about the past, present, and future. I feel this was a great experience to work with this classroom.

2 ELED 453- Diagnosis Corrections Reading Madison Elementary/ Madison, SD
For  my Diagnosis and Correction of Reading  class I worked with fourth graders at Madison Elementary.  I administered the DIBELS and BADER testing.  It was helpful to administer these tests to help the teacher understand what level the students are reading at.  I also worked with a group of  five fourth graders teaching them South Dakota history.  Each week we read a chapter in a South Dakota history book and a form of assessment was given.  I felt using a variety of assessment methods was very helpful in this group to keep them motivated in the topic at study.

2 Music 353- Music Methods Madison Elementary School/ Madison, SD
My field experience for Music was very interesting and fun. I taught two music lessons that were about forty minutes a piece. In these lessons a integrated learning topics such as: knowing the difference between your left and right and what are shapes and different types of shapes. Not only did the students have a song to sing about these different items, we also had group discussion and activities to help each student understand the material better.

3 ELED 454-Guided Reading Medary Elementary School/ Brookings, SD
During my field experience for Guided Reading, I was in a second grade classroom. In a matter of a few months I had learned a variety of ways to help students with their reading and writing ability. The teacher especially made time out of the day to make sure students would get their daily five routines in. This gave the teacher time to work with different level reading groups along with students learning how to independently work on their own activities.
3 ELED 320- K-8 Science Methods St. Thomas School/ Madison, SD
For my Science methods class I was in a fourth grade classroom at St. Thomas. This class was a small class so it was very easy to do more hands on projects for I was able to have more one on one time with the students. During this experience I taught three lessons on rocks and minerals. The students seemed to enjoy the projects and it was nice to have hands on projects for them to interact with.

During my level III experience I was in a second grade classroom in Brookings. I was in the classroom for two weeks for the whole day.
