Parent Interview

The parent I interviewed is a part of my family. I unfortunately do not get to spend enough time with her or her child, however he is a very special and smart child who will do great things in his life. I just want to say thank you for participating in my parent interview. You know who you are!

1. What is the Special need of your child?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

2. What are your personal goals for the education of your child?

To make sure that my child is getting the best education in his school as possible. Also I would like to see that he is going to be more socially interactive with other children his age.

3. What is your current relationship with the school, special, education, and administration?

As a parent, I would like to hear about what is going on in my child's classroom and his progress academically. However, I do get a letter sent home once a week about what is going on in the class. I am asked when I can get together for my child's IEP. I am glad my opinion about the education of my son is listened to. I am concerned about my child's education and the IEP team will help put this into his plan to help him improve educationally as well as socially.

4. How can it be improved?

I ask my child how school was and what they did in school today, but he never really gives me any information. As a parent I would like to know more of what my student is learning other than just seeing the homework he brings home. I would like to get a monthly letter about what has been happening this past month and what the teacher plans for the future month. I also would like the teacher to email me if any issues are happening with my child in the classroom or school system so I can keep involved and talk to my child about that certain situation at home.

5. What form of communication is used and how often? Is this best?

I am usually only contacted yearly to reevaluate my students IEP or I get a letter about the class about 2 or 3 times a school year. I am involved with parent teacher conferences that happen. I also get progress reports of my child about every 9 weeks. I also use e-mail quite frequently if I have any question for the teacher.

6. How often do you communicate with school?

Overall, it is about 6 to 8 times a year. I keep in touch quite a bit with the teacher to discuss the medication my child is on and to make sure it is working properly.

7. How effective is the special education program?

My child has been in this school system since he started school so I don't know if it should have a better program, but overall besides not having as much communication  as I would like I feel this program is good. It seems like he enjoys school and that he is keeping up with assignments.

8. How flexible is the program to meet the needs of your child?

I feel overall the program is doing fairly well. I wish that I would hear more from my child’s IEP team but if I ever have any questions I email or call the teacher and she will get back to me right away.

9. What problems have you had with school?

I really have not had any problems with the school so far. If I have any questions about my child's education I call and speak with the teacher. She is very helpful with answering any questions I have and if it is something she is not sure if she checks on it and gets back to me with the answer.

10. Are you part of any parent group?

No I am not in any type of parent group. I am involved in a PTT group which stands for Parents and Teachers Together. We meet once a month to discuss topics that will benefit our students. It is nice to come together with other parents and teachers to discuss things that we can do to help our children grow.

11. What communication do you have with other parents?

I am friends with a couple parents that have children in my child's class but other than that I only really see and talk to other parents at games or school activities.

12. What community involvement does your child have?

He is involved in boy scouts, baseball, and he will help me volunteer at the movie theater.

13. Are you satisfied with your communication with your child?

I wish I would be able to get more information from the school about my child, but overall we have good communication with each other.
